Water Waste Prevention: It’s your job, too!

Water WasteThis program is an important element in our overall water supply management strategy. The less water is wasted, the more water is available for essential uses now and in the future.

In addition, preventing water waste is the responsibility of everyone who lives in an area with a semi-arid climate like Marin’s. Fortunately, most VOMWD customers agree with us and don’t even realize they are wasting water, which is why we point it out when it comes to our attention.

VOMWD has identified the following practices as water waste:

  • The washing down of sidewalks, walkways, driveways, parking lots and all other hard surfaced areas by direct hosing. An exception would be to properly dispose of flammable or other dangerous liquids or substances, or to prevent or eliminate materials dangerous to the public health and safety, in which case the hose is to be fitted with a shut-off nozzle;
  • The escape of water through breaks or leaks within the customer’s plumbing or private distribution systems for a 48-hour period of time. A break or leak should reasonably have been discovered and corrected within that time;
  • Irrigation systems that allow water to pond on the site, over-water or over-spray the areas being watered to the point where water is collecting and/or creating run-off.
